If you like working with clay, you will have a blast making your own DIY clay magnets. If you have little ones at home, they will have tons of fun helping you make these.

You can use these to spruce up your own fridge or whiteboard or give them away as gifts!

How to Make DIY Clay Magnets

Step 1. To start, tear off a piece of clay. Be sure to carefully seal the rest of it to make sure it doesn’t dry out.

Step 2. Use your hands to soften the clay and then roll it out. It should be about 5mm thickness.

The thicker you roll it, the longer it will take to dry.

Step 3. Once your clay is rolled out, grab your cookie cutters. Cut out shapes and smooth out the edges.

Step 4. If you notice any cracks, you can easily fix them by dipping your finger in water and brushing the cracks out.

Step 5. If you prefer, you can cut out shapes using an X-acto knife. Here, I have made cat ears, a stem for the strawberry, and the head and body of a butterfly.

Step 6. Keep in mind that this clay dries quickly, so if you are attaching different components together, you should seal the individual parts until you are ready to use them.

This picture shows how I attached the cat’s ears. To join two pieces, make small irregular cuts on both pieces, moisten them with a little bit of water, and press them together.

Then, use your finger as a tool to smooth out the joining line so that the two pieces fit seamlessly together. This will ensure that the pieces stay together when your magnet dries!

Step 8. When you connect the two pieces together using your finger to smooth out the joining line, it will look like one piece.

How Long Does These DIY Clay Magnets Take to Make?

This project takes a little bit of time to finish, but it only requires about an hour of active time in total. It’s a fast project that requires some patience but is totally worth it in the end.

I left my clay pieces overnight to dry and then gave the paint an additional 5-10 hours as well.
