One of my favorite things about the spring and summer months is all the sun that we get! If you are the same way, you should try making these beautiful butterfly suncatchers.
They will make having sunshine at your house even more special while adding beautiful, seasonal décor to your windows! These are easy to make and are a great project to do with creative little kiddos.
I love making suncatchers like these with my little ones because it helps them learn about suncatchers and lets them get artistic. Kids are always happy to make something like this that will be proudly displayed at your house.
Are you ready to make your own butterfly suncatcher? Let’s get started!
Supplies You’ll Need
- Self-adhesive laminating sheets
- Colorful cardstocks
- Self-adhesive crystals
- Glitter
- Confetti
- Glue dots*
- Pencil
- Paint brush
- Scissors
*or double sided tape
How to Make a Butterfly Suncatcher
Step 1. To start, draw a butterfly on a piece of cardstock. You can use whatever color cardstock you desire.
Step 2. Now, trace the outline of your butterfly so that you have two lines.
Step 3. Next, grab your scissors and cut it out as shown.
Step 4. This butterfly is your template.
Step 5. As you can see, I made a few different sizes. If there are still some pencil lines visible, don’t worry about that as this part will be the back side of your butterfly suncatcher.
Step 6. Now, place a laminating sheet on your table with the sticky side up. Put the butterfly back side up, front side down, on the sticky sheet.
Step 7. Let’s start decorating the wings!
I added some polka dots and some random confetti and glitter.
Step 8. You can decorate your butterfly however you would like.
Step 9. This blue template is so pretty with glitter and gold polka dots, don’t you think?
Step 10. This pink one shows another way that you could decorate your butterfly.
Step 11. Here is another beautiful option in blue and gold.
Step 12. If you are using glitter, you can press the glitter into the laminating sheet a little bit so that it stays put. If you add too much glitter, you can take the butterfly and turn it over to shake some of it off.
You can also use a paintbrush to remove the glitter.
Step 13. Now, get another laminating sheet and lay it on top of your butterfly, sticky side down. Press it firmly over your butterfly.
Step 14. Cut the butterfly out.
Step 15. You can also add crystals to the front if you want some extra pizzaz.
Step 16. Your beautiful butterfly suncatcher is complete! Add glue dots on the back to hang it on your window.
You could also hang it up on the wall or on furniture. Enjoy!
How Long Does This Butterfly Suncatcher Take to Make?
