I am always eager to find new flower crafts. If you love all things flowers as well, I have the perfect weekend project for you, coffee filter flowers.

Whenever possible, I try to use items that I already have on hand for my craft projects. That’s one of the reasons why I adore this coffee filter project so much.

You only need a few basic items to create your own vibrant flowers, including coffee filters. These would look great arranged in a vase or attached to a card or present.

You could even make several and use them for party centerpieces. I love to play with different colors when I make crafts like this.

This project is creative and fun. Let’s get started!

How to Make Coffee Filter Flowers

Step 1. Make a stack with your four coffee filters. Flatten them out and fold them in half.

Step 2. Fold it in half again.

Step 3. Fold the filters in half one more time. You should now have a small triangular shape.

Step 4. Hold your triangular coffee filter stack together. Cut in a curved fashion around the top of your triangle to make the petals.

Step 5. When you unfold your triangle, you should have four flower shapes. Separate them into two stacks, placing two coffee filter flowers in each stack.

Step 6. This is where you get to have some fun and get creative! Grab your washable markers and start decorating.

You can make similar patterns and use coordinating colors on both stacks to ensure that your flower design is cohesive.

Step 7. This picture shows another design idea. The possibilities are truly endless!

Step 8. Cover both stacks of flowers with water. The filters should be wet enough to make the colors blend.

Now, you will need to be patient and wait for your flowers to dry. If you use the air-dry method, this will take about 2-3 hours.

If you place them in direct sunlight, you will only need to wait about 30 minutes. You could even put them in the oven at 130° F for 20 minutes.

Step 9. Check on your flowers to see if they have dried.

Step 10. Once they are dry, you will notice that the flower colors are beautifully blended.

Step 11. Take one stack of flowers. Place a finger in the center so that you are holding both filters together.

Step 12. Using your other hand, begin twisting the top layer upward to make a bundle. Start to gently pinch and twist the bottom of the bundle.

Step 13. When you are done, you should have a pointed end at the bottom of your flower bundle.

Step 14. Do the same thing with the other stack.

Step 15. Hold the two bundles together by the pointed bottoms.

Step 16. Flip your flower bundle upside down so that you are holding it with the pointed bottom side up.

Step 17. Get your pipe cleaner and start wrapping the pipe cleaner around the pointed bottom until the entire point is covered with a few tight loops.

Step 18. It is important to ensure a tight fit so that the flowers don’t fall apart. You can now add a little bit of glue to the pipe cleaner wrapping with a hot glue gun for a bit of added security if you’d like.

Step 19. The rest of pipe cleaner (the portion that is not wrapped around the coffee filter flowers) should be straight to form a stem. Shape the flower by separating each layer to get that full flowery look.

Step 20. Your beautiful coffee filter flower is done!

How Long Do These Flowers Take to Make?

This project does not require a ton of active crafting time. The most time-consuming part of these flowers is waiting for the coffee filters to dry.

Arranging and decorating the flowers and then wrapping the pipe cleaner will only take you 10-20 minutes or so. But you have to factor in drying time.

If you let them air dry, it will take 2-3 hours. Giving them direct sunlight will speed up the process and you will probably only have to wait 30 minutes or so.

You could also put them in the oven at 130° F. This will take about 20 minutes.

In all, this project could take you anywhere from 35 minutes to 3.5 hours. Keep in mind that much of this time is drying time.
