DIY foam dough is a must-try, easy project that is fun for the whole family. It turns out cute and colorful and will provide plenty of entertainment for your children!

I am a huge fan of sensory activities for kids (and maybe for myself a little bit too!) My little ones can play with sand, slime, clay, and more for hours on end.

I also love sensory play because it helps my kids stay regulated and enhances their fine motor skills, imagination, and creativity. One of the things that I don’t love about sensory supplies is that they can sometimes be pricey, especially with how often my kids use them.

Luckily, making your own sensory items is easy and inexpensive. This DIY Foam Dough is one of my favorite quick recipes.

It is fast and easy to make using pantry staples like cornstarch, food coloring, and shaving foam. You can easily double or triple the recipe to make enough foam for a play date or children’s party.

Getting your kiddos involved in making this DIY Foam Dough is a great way to help them learn basic measuring, ratios, mixing, stirring, and more. Here’s to some foam dough-filled fun!

How to Make DIY Foam Dough

Step 1. Once you have all your ingredients and supplies ready to go, you can begin making your DIY Foam Dough by pouring and measuring your shave foam. Do this by squeezing the shave foam into a measuring cup.

We will need 1 cup of shave foam in total.

Step 2. Now, pour the cup of shave foam into your mixing bowl. Then, add a few drops of food coloring.

Step 3. Use your spoon to mix the shaving foam and food coloring together well. Keep mixing until the food coloring is well-incorporated into the shave foam.

Step 4. Now, it’s time to add the cornstarch to the bowl. You will need ½ cup of cornstarch in total.

If you are increasing the recipe, just keep in mind that the ratio of cornstarch to shave foam is 1:2.

Use your spoon to stir the mixture together well. It should be getting smaller in volume and becoming firm.

If it is too sticky or wet, add some more cornstarch. If it is too dry, add a little bit more shave foam.

Step 5. You should now be able to pick it up in your hand without having it stick too much. Remember to put it back in the bowl and add more cornstarch if it is too sticky to handle.

Step 6. Make sure that it is a nice firm consistency before giving it to kiddos to play with.

Step 7. Once it’s ready, start playing! You can use cookie cutters, play or plastic knives, and more to make it more fun!

Step 8. To store, put the foam dough into an airtight container in the fridge. It will eventually dry out and you will need to make a new batch, but in the meantime, you and your kids will have plenty of fun playing with your foam dough!
