Do your kids enjoy learning about space, the solar system, and the galaxy? If so, these DIY galaxy jars will be super fun for you and your children to do together.
To make these beautiful galaxy jars, you will need a few basic materials including a glass jar like a mason jar, white cotton balls, and glitter. You will also need tempera paint.
I used pink, purple, and blue to make my galaxy jars, but you could use any colors. Blacks and grays would look great in these!
One of my favorite things about this project is that the finished product is so pretty. When you are done with this fun and simple project, your kids can display their work on your mantle or in their bedrooms.

Supplies You’ll Need
- Glass jar
- White cotton balls
- Fine glitter
- Cold water
- Tempera paint*
- Teaspoon
- Barbeque stick
*You need to use at least 2 colors to achieve the look that you want for these galaxy jars. I have used pink, purple, and blue for my galaxy jars.
How to Make DIY Galaxy Jars
Step 1. To begin, you will need to pour a small amount of water into your glass jar. I would suggest filling the glass jar about ¼ of the way.
Then, choose the first paint color that you wish to use and add it to the jar.
Step 2. Now, put the lid on your jar and shake it so that the water and the paint mix together.
Step 3. Now, add some glitter to your mixture.
Step 4. Then, get your cotton balls. Spread a few of them out so that they are no longer in a ball shape.
Now, add them to your jar.
Step 5. Your cotton balls will need to be firmly placed into the jar. Use a spoon to press them down.
You may need to add more cotton balls. The entire bottom of the jar should be covered with cotton balls.
Keep spreading out your cotton balls, adding them to the jar, and pressing them down until you have enough to completely cover the bottom of the jar.
Step 6. Now, you will need to repeat the process with another layer of paint. Start by adding some more water to the jar.
Step 7. Continue the process by getting another color of paint. Mix it into the water with a spoon.
Step 8. Now, get your glitter and add it to the jar. Then, spread some more cotton balls out.
Add them to the jar.
Step 9. Now, we will repeat the steps for a third time. Begin by adding some more water to the jar to form another layer.
Step 10. Then, get another color of paint and stir it into the water. Add some glitter.
Step 11. Now, spread some more cotton balls out and add them to the jar. Your entire jar should be filled now, but if it is not, keep repeating the process with more water, paint, glitter, and cotton balls until you reach the top.
Step 12. Put the lid on. Your beautiful galaxy jar is complete.
Enjoy!
How Long Do These DIY Galaxy Jars Take to Make?
This project is super quick, which makes it an excellent craft to do with kids. The entire process of making these galaxy jars is only about 15 minutes from start to finish.
You could easily do this at a space-themed birthday party with a group of children. It would also be a good rainy day afternoon project.
