Have you ever had mochi? They are delicious and so pretty to look at! These lovely DIY Mochi Squishies are displayed in a beautiful, decorative tray and turn out super adorable.
They have cute little faces and would be cute goodie bag stuffers or would also just look nice as tabletop or mantle décor.
I love that you can make them with everyday materials like decorative paper, balloons, and pillow filling. You can use whatever balloon colors you want, but I chose to go with pastel colors since mochi usually come in beautiful pastels.
Ready to make your own mochi squishies and pretty box? Let’s get started!

Supplies You’ll Need
To make two mochi you will need:
- 2x Balloons*
- 1x A4 Thick decorative paper
- Scissors
- Pencil
- Ruler
- Black permanent marker
- Pink marker
- Tape
- Pillow filling
*Mochi are usually in pastel colors so pastel colored balloons would be best.
How to Make DIY Mochi Squishy
Step 1. The first step in making your own DIY mochi squishies is to get your balloons and snip off the ends using your scissors.
Step 2. Now, get your pillow stuffing. Start filling one of your balloons with the stuffing.
Keep adding filling until you get the desired shape and size for your squishie.
Step 3. Do the same with your second balloon. Start by adding filling and keep going until you like what you see.
Step 4. Now, get your tape and use it to close the opening of one of your balloons.
Step 5. Then, do the same for the second balloon. When you are done, you should have two stuffed ballons that have been securely taped shut to keep the filling inside.
Step 6. Next, get your markers to draw a sweet face onto each of your balloons. You can use your black marker to add a nose and eyes (I did different shapes of eyes on each one) and your pink marker to add rosy cheeks.
Be sure to let the marker dry completely before you move on to the next step.
Step 7. Your adorable squishies are complete! The next several steps are optional and will show you how to make a beautiful tray for your squishies using your decorative paper.
You can make a tray or skip these steps if you don’t want one! If you would like to make a tray for your mochi squishies, you will begin by cutting the shape that is shown in the picture out of your decorative paper.
The specific dimensions will depend on how large you made your mochis. I made the large rectangle 4.5” long and 2” wide.
The side walls of mine are about 1” high.
Step 8. Now, cut a second rectangle that is the same size as your first one (mine is 4.5” long and 2” wide).
Step 9. Then, fold the four walls of your tray upward to form a box-like shape. Tape the corners together so that the tray stays intact.
Step 10. Finally, attach your second rectangle to the bottom of the box/tray using tape and add your squishies. Your cute craft is complete!
How Long Does This DIY Mochi Squishy Take to Make?
The entire project should take about 20 minutes. Making the two mochi squishies will take about 10 minutes, while getting the decorative tray prepared takes another 10 minutes.
You will be done with this super sweet project in less than 30 minutes!
