Ladybug Craft Out of Toilet Paper Roll

Make your very own ladybug craft with toilet paper rolls! This is a cute little project for children of all ages as long as they are supervised by adults.

ladybug craft

If you’ve got a couple of young ones, then you know that they’re the ones that drag things in, not the cat. Most often, it’s going to be a bug, especially pretty ones like ladybugs.

Well, I’ve always had an incurable fascination with ladybugs. But they’re bugs, and I also have an incurable fear of anything that crawls, creeps, or slithers.

How about you meet midway with a fun craft session? These bright, gorgeous ladybugs are actually made from toilet rolls, a pair of socks, colored paper, and other craft essentials.

So, let’s take a look at all the supplies you’ll need to make this lovely ladybug.

How to Make a Ladybug Craft

Here is a step-by-step tutorial on how to make these little bugs!

Step 1

Grab a sock and start rolling it into a sock ball of sorts.

Once you’ve done that, grab the other sock and stuff the sock ball into it, and push it through to the very end.

Step 2

The next step is to take an empty toilet paper roll and pull your sock over it, as seen here. So, when you’re picking out your pair of socks for this project, remember to pick out a pair that’s longer than ankle length.

Step 3

Carefully tuck the ends of the sock into the roll. The balled-up sock you stuffed in earlier should sit comfortably on the rim of the toilet paper on the inside of the sock.

So, that means that you’ll be tucking the corners into the opposite end of the toilet roll. Also, make sure that there aren’t any wrinkles when you’re tucking them in.

Step 4

Now, let’s take a look at how to make the wings. First, use a compass to measure the center of the toilet roll, or in other words, find the halfway point. It’s okay if it’s a little smaller if you prefer that.

Step 5

Then, on a sheet of red paper, use those measurements to draw a circle. The radius will be the same as the length of half the toilet roll.

Step 6

Use a black marker to outline the circle you just drew. Just be sure to use thicker paper for this project. It’s going to be much nicer if the wings of the ladybug remain unbent.

Alternatively, you can stick the wings onto a bit of cardboard first and then glue them in place on the ladybug.

Draw a line down the center to divide the circle in half.

Next, go ahead and draw circles on either half of the circle. These will be the ladybug’s spots, so once you’ve drawn them, go ahead and fill them in, too.

Step 7

The final step is to draw the ladybug’s antennae.

When you’re done, your ladybug should look something like this. This is a project by itself that I’m sure your little ones would love to make on their own!

Step 8

Now, however, it’s time they could use a little help from you to cut out the different components that they just drew. So, grab a pair of scissors and start cutting along the outline, as indicated.

Cut down the middle of the circle, dividing it into two halves for either wing. Also, remember to cut out the antennae.

Step 9

When you’re ready to stick the winds and antennae onto the body, grab your hot glue gun and apply a bit of adhesive to the ‘neck’ of the ladybug. This is where you’ll be attaching the wings.

Hold the paper firmly in place for a few moments to allow the glue to dry and for the paper to stick.

Then, repeat this step for the other wing, as well. Just a word of caution: don’t glue the entire wing onto the toilet roll. You only want the top of it to be stuck in place.

Step 10

The next step is to hot glue a couple of googly eyes onto the ‘head’ of the ladybug.

Finally, stick the two antennae on, as well.

Step 11

Step 11 is completely optional. You can leave your ladybug be as it is, or you can stick a clothespin onto the back. That way, you’ll have a clip-on ladybug that you can use to decorate your craft space.

Pretty cool, huh?

Who Can Make These Ladybugs?

This project would be particularly popular with the younger kids, especially toddlers and preschoolers. But it’s also a great craft project for older kids, tween,  and even teens and adults.

Where Can I Use These Ladybugs?

I think these ladybugs would look utterly fabulous and sassy perched atop different surfaces of your home. You can sit them atop plants, tack them onto your curtains using a clothespin, set them up on your craft desk or your kids’ nightstand, and even as a part of a themed decorative arrangement.

Materials

  • Toilet roll
  • Thick red A5 sheet of paper
  • Pair of black socks
  • Wiggle googly eyes
  • 1x clothes peg (optional)

Tools

  • Scissors
  • Black marker
  • Hot glue gun
  • Compass with a pencil

Instructions

  1. Gather all the different supplies that have been listed out to get started on this project.
  2. First, roll up one sock into a ball, and then stuff it into the other sock. Push the balled sock right to the end.
  3. Next, grab your toilet paper roll and push it into the sock. You will need to push the roll in till the very end, where the balled sock sits.
  4. Next, tuck the ends of the sock into the roll. Smooth out any wrinkles, if needed.
  5. Grab a compass and measure half the height of the toilet roll(or less, if you want smaller wings).
  6. Then, on a sheet of red paper, draw a circle without altering the radius—which will be half the height of the toilet roll.
  7. Use a black marker to draw over the pencil outline of the circle.
  8. Draw a line down the center and divide the circle into two equal hemispheres.
  9. Proceed to draw round circles in either hemisphere and then fill them up.
  10. Don’t forget to draw antennae, as well.
  11. Now, grab a pair of scissors and cut out the different components. This is when you cut the circle into two hemispheres. So, you’ll have those two hemispheres and a pair of antenna cut-outs.
  12. Adhere the top of one wing to the toilet roll and hold it in place till it sticks. Repeat this step with the other wing.
  13. Next, adhere a couple of googly eyes and then, finally, the two antennae.
  14. You can also consider sticking a clothespin to the bottom of the roll. This will help you clip the ladybug onto different surfaces if required.
